I feel like each time I log into Instagram, my feed is flooded by what looks like a beautiful fruit soup. A little scrolling and I discovered these beautiful photos taking my feed by storm are acai bowls. So what is this popular “superfood” that’s getting people to take out their cameras and coming back for more? I had to find out.

What Are Acai Bowls?

Well, first things first- acai is a superfood, filled with antioxidants from Brazil. It tastes like a mix of strawberries, blueberries and a hint of chocolate. In the United States it can be found in several forms- dried, powdered or frozen pureed forms at places like Whole Foods or local health food stores. From there the acai berry gets blended into a thick substance similar to a smoothie or milkshake and is topped most commonly with fruit or nuts (but the possibilities are really endless- here is a guide to get started on those possibilities).

What’s With The Popularity

I see this rise in popularity being two-fold. First- it’s super healthy. The acai berry’s health benefits include improving your heart, aiding in weight loss and clearing up skin. Secondly, like I mentioned above- these bowls are gorgeous. The rich color is natural and so beautiful. Add a few fruits to it and you have a masterpiece almost too lovely to eat. But the biggest reason it’s taking guests by storm is its delightful taste.

Why Should My Restaurant Care?

Whenever a trend like these acai bowls come around – you need to ask yourself, is it a food that’s here to stay? I think so. Here’s why:

Instagram already has 337,451 posts, and boy do they look good. It’s easy to see people are seeking these out and snapping pics to prove it. You know what that means? Free marketing!

While these bowls are on the pricier side at $5-10, they provide a filling breakfast that many guests see the price as worth it.
