If you were wondering how much people will spend on America’s day of Independence this year, the slightly official number is $300, according to a survey sponsored by Visa.

The Red, White and You survey showed that spending is up 58% this year (it was something like $191 last year). And the good news for retailers is that “68% of consumers said they’ll host or attend a barbecue, the most in the nine-year history of the NRF survey,” according to USA Today. 

If you’re a retailer this is good news because you probably have, or did have, plenty to sell and help accommodate those parties. For the record, everybody in Rhode Island was sold out of 4th of July bandanas this year… just sayin’.

Although National Retail Federation spokeswoman Kathy Grannis says that the 4th isn’t a “consumer holiday,” but I beg to differ! I’m hosting a barbecue this year, and that $300 seems like an understatement. The extra coolers! The banners! The extra pool floats! The red, white and blue tablecloths!  Heck, my dog even got a sporty new red white and blue collar!

And let’s not forget the Pinterest-inspired recipes and decorations! People never had such pressure at their parties before. Any 4th of July Party is a dud without fruit skewers that look like an American Flag, right?
