busy bar

I had a love-hate relationship with the closing time back when I tended bar. On the one hand, there was the ability to sit down, sip my shift drink, and count my tips. On the other hand, there was the promised hassle of closing out dozens of tabs.

The process is both time-consuming and repetitive. You have to print all the checks and drop them into folios, hand those over to the guests, collect the checks and cards, swipe the cards and return the signature slips to guests, and then collect the slip and adjust tips.

During all that time you can practically feel the guest love (and your tip) slipping away.

Today, we’re excited to make the process easier and faster with Pre-Authorization for the Upserve Restaurant POS by Upserve.

When a check is “pre-authed,” the server can print the signature slip and deliver it to the guest at the end of the shift. It saves time, paper and even preserves some of that guest love.

Pre-authorization works like this:

  • First, opt into pre-authorizations on Upserve HQ.
  • When you swipe to name a tab, select the pre-auth option.
  • At the end of the night, you can close out the tab without swiping the card again. A guest signature and applied tip are still required.

It’s that easy, and it removes several steps normally required just to close out a tab. It also helps protect against walkouts for the bar without having to hold a credit card under the counter or bar.

It’s all part of our effort to make restaurateurs, and their staff’s, lives easier and simpler – allowing them to put more time into improving the guest experience.
