Ocean State Sandwich Shop, a locally owned restaurant in Rhode Island, uses fresh, local ingredients whenever they can… including their restaurant management platform and POS system.
Eric Handwerger is the owner of Ocean State Sandwich Shop. His experience running his own restaurant, with multiple locations, has come with many choices and taught him many valuable lessons.
For Eric, choosing the right ingredient, and the right product, is essential. Which is why when it came time to select his restaurant management platform, he chose Upserve.
“You’re not going to find a lot of places that are roasting their own turkeys, or showing up at the bakery at 5:30 in the morning to get sub rolls, or going out to the farm to talk to the farmer, see the product, and bring fresh stuff in.”
Every Location, One Place
“I always joke that I was born in the restaurant industry. My father had a restaurant in downtown Providence in the late ’70s, and my mother was the salad-maker there.
The moment I knew I wanted to have my own shop was after I had kids. I’d managed restaurants for 15 years, working 90 hours a week. I wasn’t a dad, and I said, ‘I need to do something that’s going to change my life.’ It’s almost 4 years later. I’ve got 2 locations, and yeah, doing a great business. The biggest challenge I have currently is trying to juggle both locations, and make sure they’re both running smoothly.”
“As an owner I wear so many hats. I’m chef, janitor, customer service, everything, delivery guy, so to be able to just have it all in one spot for myself.”
Which is where Upserve comes in. With deli POS features such as multi-location menu management and customization, a built-in logbook and mobile app, and an integrated Kitchen Display System (KDS), restaurant owners with multiple locations can manage multiple locations with ease.
“As an owner I wear so many hats. I’m chef, janitor, customer service, everything, delivery guy, so to be able to just have it all in one spot for myself.
The nice thing is with the service that I get from Upserve, is I can track what’s going on in each store. I can go back and see everything that happened on a given day. Okay, it was snowing this day, but we had a killer special and this is how it affected our business or a Facebook post, and see how sales trended, and did I get any yelp reviews. Everything being all there in one spot for me to look at, rather than me having to go hunting for it on my own, as a business owner, that’s awesome.”
